On 24 January – 04 February, 2022, the annual RSA-JINR Summer School for undergraduate and postgraduate students of various RSA universities was hosted by the iThemba Labs research centre. This year the School was held in the video conference format.
One of the School working days was dedicated to the JINR UC project «Virtual Laboratory for the Study of Experimental Nuclear Physics». In addition to the introductory lectures given by Dr Shaun Wyngaardt (South Africa) and Prof Yury Panebrattsev (JINR), practical classes were organised by JINR staff members Kseniya Klygina and Pavel Semchukov. The virtual workshop included training on the basics of nuclear electronics and several virtual lab works on the study of spontaneous fission and gamma ray spectroscopy. In collaboration with the School organisers, on the basis of the Hopin platform, an active dialogue was established, when the students could ask questions to the tutors, solve tasks, and do tests. At the end, both tutors and students were satisfied with the event.
Despite the fact that the virtual workshop was originally developed in a way to let students work individually, in the process of running the School, it became possible to bring students together in a large team to work more effectively. Regardless of the COVID-19 situation, this experience can be useful when holding similar events at various universities and JINR Information Centres.
