About Dubna
Dubna is one of relatively new towns of Russia and Moscow region. It is worldwide known as one of the largest scientific centers. Scientists from various countries have been fruitfully working together here for more than 60 years. It is the sole Russian town which has been perpetuated in Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of Elements: the element 105 discovered by the scientists of the town is called “Dubnium”.
Dubna is 125 km away from Moscow, it is situated in a picturesque corner of the Northern part of Moscow Region. Its population is 75,000 people (2016). Since 2001 Dubna has been a Science Town of the Russian Federation. National issues in the area of fundamental science, national defense and production of high-tech equipment models are successfully implemented here.
Dubna was granted the status of a town on June 24th, 1956, due to the establishment of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, an international scientific center, the same years in March.
The development of Dubna town, its enterprises and research organizations was directly supported by such eminent people of national science and technology as A.M.Baldin, N.N. Bogolyubov, D.I. Blokhintsev, V.I. Wexler, V.P. Dzhelepov, I.V. Kurchatov, A.P. Logunov, M.A. Markov, M.G. Meshcheryakov, B.M. Pontecorvo, G.N. Flerov, I.M. Frank, F.L. Shapiro, D. Shirkov, A.Ja. Bereznyak, A.I. Mikoyan, A.N. Tupolev, S.I. Chetverikov.
JINR, with 16 Member States, remains a world recognized leader in many areas of scientific research.
In 1994 the State University Dubna was established.
Among guests of the town there are such national and foreign State figures as N. Bohr, P. Dirac, J.F. Joliot-Curie, E. McMillan, G. Seaborg etc. Such academicians as A.P. Alexandrov, N.A. Dollezhal, M.V. Keldysh, L.D. Landau, A.A. Mintz, D.V. Skobeltsyn etc.worked in cooperation with scientists and experts from Dubna.
