On 23-25 March 2022, JINR staff members Semion Gurskiy and Elena Badawy took part in the “English Language Week” held at the Kadyshevsky Lyceum. Students of 7-10 grades listened to the lectures delivered in English, which were dedicated to the history of the Joint Institute and the development of nuclear research in our country, as well as to the treatment of cancer by proton therapy.
In her lecture, senior specialist of the Department of International Cooperation Elena Badawy provided a historical insight on the development of the nuclear programme in the 40-50s of the XX century and the prerequisites for the foundation of JINR. She also outlined the current structure of the Institute, spoke about the Member States comprised, and emphasised the importance of international contribution to the modern scientific research.
From the lecture by a researcher at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Semion Gurskiy, the listeners learned about the method of proton therapy applied all over the world for the treatment of oncological diseases, about the equipment used in this case, and about the advantages of the method over traditional surgery. In addition, Semion demonstrated an interactive video showing the main stages of the process: from obtaining protons to delivering the beam into the patient.
The aim of the Regional Physics and Mathematics Lyceum named after Academician V.G. Kadyshevsky established with the active support of JINR is to create a comfortable educational environment for the well-rounded development of young people and reveal their talents. The Lyceum provides training of potential staff members in physics, mathematics, information technology, biology, and chemistry.
