On 4 and 19 April 2022, second-year students of the Faculty of Physics at Moscow State University participated in virtual visits to the JINR Laboratories. The visitors saw the DC-280 cyclotron hall in the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions and the NICA accelerator complex of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics.
At the beginning of the tour, Andrey Protasov, Head of the FLNR DC-280 accelerator facility, spoke about the elements of the Periodic Table, which had been synthesised at the U-400 cyclotron, and told the listeners about the plans to obtain new chemical elements. The tour continued in the hall of the DC-280 cyclotron, where Andrey explained the principles of the facility operation.
The SHE factory including the DC-280 was built to conduct experiments on the synthesis and study of the nuclear physical and chemical properties of superheavy elements. The facility accelerates and transports up to 60 trillion nuclei per second, which is 10 times more than the U-400 cyclotron.
VBLHEP software engineer Nikita Sidorov guided a virtual tour of the NICA accelerator complex: the students were shown the Heavy Ion Linear Accelerator (HILAC), the Booster – first ion acceleration ring, and the Nuclotron built in the 90s and representing the second acceleration ring. Nikita also told the guests about the applied research to be carried out at the NICA accelerator complex.
