NICA for the Far East

On 21 April, 2022, VBLHEP leading researcher Sergey Merts gave an online lecture "NICA: Back to the Future" for the JINR InfoCentre at the Kamchatka State University named after Vitus Bering and students of 9-11 grades of the Physics and Mathematics Lyceum "Technical" in Vladivostok. The event was held as part of the JINR UC Lectorium.

From the first part of the lecture, the listeners learned what accelerators are for, what types they can be, what matter consists of, and why scientists accelerate particles. In addition, Sergey told the participants that the accelerator is a large microscope that allows us to look at a smaller “relief” of matter. The second part of the lecture was devoted to the NICA collider. The lecturer highlighted such issues as the feasibility of building an accelerator complex, the systems included in its complex, and the results that scientists plan to obtain using it. At the end of the lecture, Sergey Merts noted that the processing of data obtained at NICA will require high computational performance that can be provided by the Govorun Supercomputer, which is a joint project of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and the Laboratory of Information Technologies.
