Stage 3 of the International Student Practice

From 6 to 22 November, 2024, JINR University Centre hosted the International Student Practice for 18 students from Egyptian universities. On 22 November, they presented the results of their work on 10 projects covering various areas of physics and information technologies. For some students, the field of research was entirely new.

Menna Elnoamani commented: “I enjoyed many aspects of the Practice. I have mastered a new method, neutron activation analysis, gained valuable experience, and deepened my knowledge in this scientific field. Furthermore, working at JINR helped me develop important personal qualities: teamwork, patience, and effective time management. I realised I am capable of tackling unfamiliar tasks, finding solutions, and building connections.”

Yuri Sobolev (FLNR) said of student Mahmoud Abdelgani: “Although Mahmoud is a biophysicist by training, he quickly mastered the knowledge and skills necessary for the internship, including working with the VME data acquisition system and the C++ scripts for data analysis in ROOT.”

The final presentation day was attended by Richard Newman, SAINTS Manager at iThemba LABS, who gave a welcome speech and told the Egyptian students about their opportunities to participate in scientific schools in South Africa.

Besides the work in the laboratories, the students participated in excursions to the NICA accelerator complex, the Laboratory of Information Technologies, the NOvA experiment control room and the Dark Room, and an exhibition of the JINR main facilities. This allowed them to get acquainted with cutting-edge technologies and research methods.

Samir Hasanen stated: “The conditions JINR provides for scientific research and learning, along with the excellent work and support of my supervisors, significantly benefited me. I really liked this place and would like to pursue my PhD studies here in the future.”

Mohamed Hassanien commented: “I liked how well-equipped the labs were, at the highest level. The lecturers were keen to give us as much information as possible.”

A highlight of the programme was an introduction to Dubna University, and a traditional trip to Moscow allowed the students to immerse themselves in the pre-holiday atmosphere of the capital.
