Visit of Cuban Trainees from MPEI

On 5 June 2026, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) welcomed a delegation of Cuban students and specialists undergoing training at the National Research University "MPEI" (Moscow Power Engineering Institute) under additional professional education programmes.

The guests were accompanied by Alexander Tarasov, Vice-Rector for External Relations, and representatives of the University's Directorate for Integration Policy Development. The visit was part of the educational programme for students of the MPEI Center for Targeted Training, opened in Havana in partnership with the electricity corporation "Unión Eléctrica" (UNE).

The meeting began at the University Centre (UC), where the guests were introduced to the main areas of the Institute's work. For the convenience of the listeners, information about educational opportunities at JINR was presented in Spanish. The heads of the UC and the International Cooperation Department, Dmitry Kamanin and Otilia-Ana Kulikov, took part in a discussion on the prospects of joint efforts in training scientific and engineering personnel for the Republic of Cuba.

A discussion about the history of Dubna and the Institute continued at the largest periodic table in Eurasia, which has become a traditional spot for commemorative photos of participants in the Institute's educational programmes.

The delegation visited the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics (LHEP). The Cuban specialists got acquainted with the laboratory's basic facility – the Nuclotron accelerator complex – as well as with the legendary synchrophasotron. The excursion continued at the superconducting maThe group was accompanied by Cuban specialists of the Institute – Cesar Ceballos Sánchez (Laboratory of High Energy Physics) and Katherin Shtejer Díaz (Laboratory of Nuclear Problems).

Katherin said: "I was really happy to welcome our Cuban students – master's and PhD students from MPEI – and a group of experienced engineers who run leading energy companies in Cuba. They are training in Russia to help solve the problems of our country's energy sector, which is going through a very difficult time right now. We went on the tour together, and I could see how much they enjoyed hearing the detailed explanations from the JINR specialists about training young scientists and developing advanced technologies. The engineers were especially interested in what they saw – including the unique equipment we work with ourselves. I'm sure this group will share with Cuba all the great opportunities that JINR offers – not just in fundamental science, but also in engineering education. This will be another important step in strengthening cooperation between Cuba and JINR."
