On 08-10 December, the Vth International Olympiad in Experimental Physics was held in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event brought together high school students from Bulgaria, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Poland, Russia, and other countries. Students from Dubna also took part in the contest.
The organiser of the event was the Sofia branch of the Union of Physicists in Bulgaria, and the co-organisers – the Physics Department of Sofia University «St. Kliment Ohridski» and the Strumica branch of the Society of Physicists of Macedonia. The trip of the Dubna team was supported by the grant of the Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria at JINR.
Our team included: student of Lyceum No. 6 Grigor Adamyan, student of Gymnasium No. 11 Artem Lavrov, student of School No. 9 Marina Petukhova, and the team leader Irina Osipenkova – teacher of physics at Gymnasium No. 11, tutor of the Interschool Physics and Mathematics Optional Course at JINR UC.
The students were given the task to experimentally define the Boltzmann constant using modern equipment. Grigor Adamyan, a participant of the Dubna team, dealt with the challenge brilliantly and took the third prize in his age group.
The organisers are convinced that participation in such kind of the Olympiads will enable the development of physics education at school, stimulate students to continue their education in science and technology, and contribute to the professional development of teachers.
