On 24 February, 2022, an online popular-science event was held on the basis of the JINR Info Centre at KamSU. Participants were FLNP staff members Natalya Glombotskaya and Valery Lobachev and high-school students from the local schools. The meeting was organised by the JINR University Centre.
On 24 February, 2022, on the basis of the JINR Info Centre at the Kamchatka State University named after Vitus Bering (KamSU), another online popular-science event hosted by the employees of Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics Natalia Glombotskaya and Valery Lobachev was held for high-school students from the local schools. The meeting was organised by the JINR University Centre.
Natalya Glombotskaya gave an introductory lecture about JINR and the main areas of fundamental and applied research conducted in the Laboratory of Neutron Physics. She also introduced the audience to neutron activation analysis that makes it possible to study the elemental composition of samples.
Using a fragment of ceramics delivered to FLNP from Azerbaijan as an example, Natalya demonstrated the main stages of preparing the sample for investigation, including its cleaning, grinding, drying, weighing, and packing in a special container for irradiation.
Valery Lobachev showed the schoolchildren a pneumatic transport system that delivers prepared samples to the irradiation area of the IREN facility (resonance neutron source).
At the end of the meeting, FLNP engineers demonstrated an automated system that allows changing samples and delivering them to the detector in order to determine the content of chemical elements in the sample.
